Ugly Sweaters Abound in December!

Wednesday, December 19th 2007

December 19th wasn't the best weather Salem has ever seen - in fact, it was downright difficult getting to the NW Viticulture Center. Rain pounded Salem on Wednesday afternoon. Still, a crowd of about 50 YoungPros attended the "Spirit of Giving" event featuring Cyndi Astley of the United Way and Jim Griggs of Saalfeld Griggs PC.

Catered food including crab cakes, stuffed mushrooms, and salmon was provided by the NW Viticulture Center and ugly sweaters were provided by attendees - and there was no shortage of them. Sporting some fine holiday garb on the right is the team from Grove, Mueller, & Swank (left to right: Michael Roth, Derek Ellerbrook, Shayne Lehman, and Abby Hall). YoungPros were also generous in donating coats for the needy which will be taken to the Union Gospel Mission.

Cyndi Astley and Jim Griggs (pictured below) both expressed the importance of connecting passion with volunteerism. Both Astley and Griggs shared backgrounds which included volunteering in a number of different capacities. By doing so, both were able to find the volunteer opportunities that did spark passion and interest for them as businesspeople.

"When you find your passion, you become a better person, a better employee, and the community benefits," said Astley.

There are a number of resources online to help equip YoungPros with the tools they need to find a good fit in a volunteer role. Givebacktoday.org is a great community website giving broad volunteer information on needs like mentoring. Workandlearnnow.com is another great community website which connects local businesses with kids in high school classrooms.

"There are so many needs in this community as with many other communities where there are great opportunities to get involved," said Griggs.
