Powers packs a punch!

Tuesday, January 15th 2008

"Make those goals specific," exclaimed Jennifer Powers, as she led YoungPros in a goal setting exercise.

Over 60 YoungPros attended January's after hours event. For only $15, attendees were treated to a 3-course meal including salad, a chicken cordon bleu entree, and cheesecake dessert. A special thanks to Jerry Crane and Nathan Knottingham (pictured below), owners of Catering company That Food Guy who provided the full meal, wine and beverages at a substantially reduced rate just for Salem YoungPros.

January's event took place at the Reed Opera House, one of Salem's historical treasures. It was built in 1869-1870. Believe it or not, this was before the telephone was patented and before the invention of the light bulb. Luckily for YoungPros, the 3rd floor ballroom is now home to plenty of light.

For the first time, YoungPros were asked to complete a 1-page goal setting worksheet before coming to the event.

Although some may be tired of the subject in and of itself, the point of Powers' presentation was to move beyond broad generalizations and tackle specific action steps that are key to achieving the ultimate goal.

"Is it specific? Is it realistic?" asked Powers, as she moved through the crowd using goals shared by numerous YoungPros.

YoungPros will move away from the after hours events and back to a breakfast in February featuring Willamette University President Dr. Lee Pelton. Pelton will share his insight into how a partnership between downtown Salem and the university can and will be beneficial in helping Salem move forward.
