Another Sold Out Event - Over 80 YP's visit Willamette University

Tuesday, February 5th 2008

Just over 80 Salem YoungPros packed Willamette University's Alumni Lounge for another sold out event. Willamette President Lee Pelton was this month's draw, addressing issues facing the University as well as Salem in general.

Pelton (pictured at left) shared a message of vision, which included the University's push to raise adequate funding for a state of the art performing arts center which they plan to construct on the west side of the campus closer to the heart of downtown. Also, the University is developing facilities with a focus on student experience.

"Over the next decade, Willamette will build at least 3 residential commons," said Pelton. He went on to explain the concept behind the commons which would give students diverse experiences including classroom and living space within the same facility.

Beyond Willamette, Pelton shared his passion to keep Salem moving in a direction focused on vibrancy, activity, and entertainment options.

"The future of Salem and Willamette University are linked in very special ways," he said.

Pelton believes the performing arts center slated for development will play a significant factor in boosting downtown Salem's image as a destination.

Willamette University estimates their economic impact on the community to be $63 million per year. Over 1,500 annual events bring over 80,000 people to Salem. In addition, the University employs over 700 people. Over 60% of Willamette's graduates work for Marion and Polk county employers.
